The brilliance behind the film version of "21 Jump Street" was that the filmmakers knew that while the source material was a decent TV show, the premise is inherently silly. It was so weak that the TV show started moving away from it by the third of its five seasons. Thus, it was perfect fodder for a comedy action film rather than a straightforward redo. It worked so well, that a sequel was inevitable.
It's this inevitability that provides the humor in "22 Jump Street."
Schmidt and Jenko (Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum) haven't been very successful as a team since their triumphant big bust at the high school. Their bosses feel they need to be doing the same thing they did before and send them back to the Jump Street program.
Captain Dickson (Ice Cube) sends them undercover at Metro City College to investigate a new drug showing up there called Whyphy. It has already claimed the life a young woman there, so Schmidt and Jenko need to figure out who's distributing it and stop them."22 Jump Street" plays with the trappings that most action sequels contend with both on camera and behind the scenes. Nothing escapes their attention. More money unnecessarily thrown at the project/movie? Check.
Dumb reason for the slight adjustment to the project's/film's title? Check. The belief of the "people in charge" that what made the previous project/film succeed should just be repeated? Check. The movie pokes fun at it all, yet tries to stay its own entity. Unfortunately, try as it may, it can't completely rise above being just a sequel the way you feel it wants.
And you can really feel it trying. The more it makes fun of something about sequels, the closer it gets to falling into that same problem. This also means that when it's not concentrating on skewering sequels, things tend to drag a little.Yet, the movie is still really funny. All of that skewering is so right on the money. If you're like me and a fan of action films, as well as the good and bad of their sequels, you'll probably find it hilarious.
Plus there are a couple other scenes, ones that don't participate in this commentary, that are some of the funniest stuff in the entire film. There was one in particular, where Jenko figures out something embarrassing about Schmidt, that had me doubled over in my seat.Plus, they put a cap on everything with an end credits sequence that is beyond compare. As much as it would prefer to be its own film, "22 Jump Street" is a pretty fun action sequel, proving that to be a good satire you also have to be a good example of what you are satirizing.
